Perched in the Himalayas Joshimath evokes memories of early Hinduism.Adi Sankara attained enlightenment here in 800 AD, hence the name Jyothir Math. It is a major pilgrimage destination enroute to Badrinath, one of the holiest temples in North India. I took the opportunity to stroll through the village and observe the daily lives of the residents of this ancient town. Pilgrims over 1500 years have been walking from the plains to reach Badrinath, nearly a 30 day walk. The trails are still active with pilgrims. The area is full of apple orchards, old temples and is the main access point to the valley of flowers and Nanda Devi Park.
