The South American sea lion is perhaps the archetypal sea lion in appearance. Males have a very large head with a well-developed mane, making them the most lionesque of the eared seals. Both males and females are orange or brown coloured with upturned snouts. The South American sea lion's size and weight can vary considerably. Adult males can grow over 9 ft)and weigh up to 770 lb.Adult females grow up to 6–7 ft and weigh about 330 lbs. As my pictures show, the males have a harem of 3 to 18 females during mating season which lasts from August to December. The chaos in a colony is often created by sub-adults who make group raids against large males to change the status quo of the harem.
